What a Solution Engineer Actually Does (Based on My First Year)
Solution engineering sits between business and engineering. Here is what the job actually looks like day to day, from cloud pages to client calls.
The role: translating business requirements into technical solutions
A solution engineer sits in the space between what a client wants and what a team can build. The job is not to write the most code. It is to make sure the code that gets written is the right code.
In practice, that means taking a marketing brief or a business problem and turning it into something a developer can act on: a cloud page, an integration, a WordPress build, a data flow.
A typical week
My weeks mix several kinds of work:
- Building cloud pages in Salesforce Marketing Cloud for event campaigns
- WordPress builds and updates with Elementor
- Connecting Salesforce with external systems so customer data actually flows
- Stakeholder alignment: calls, documentation, estimates
Skills that matter more than raw coding
Communication, documentation, and estimation. A technically average solution that ships beats a perfect solution that never gets scoped.
How a QA and dev background helps
Spending a year writing test scenarios teaches you to ask "what happens when this fails?" before building anything. That instinct carries over directly.
Advice for juniors
Build things end to end, even small ones. A finished tiny system teaches more than ten abandoned ambitious ones.
